The Grammy awards are typically my favorite award event of the year, but this year the show left me pretty pissed.
First off, I can understand the academy's wanting to include a wide range of performers for the three and a half hour event, but because of that, only 11 of the 109 Grammys given were actually televised. It may just be me, but I think an awards show should probably focus on the awards they are giving.
Secondly, there were a few performances that were great, like Lady Gaga and the trio singing "Jolene" by Dolly Parton, but there were also a few that I would have much rather gone without, including Arcade Fire who took Album of the Year.
That brings me to my third point. Who the hell is Arcade Fire and Esperanza Spalding?! Spalding beat out both Justin Bieber and Drake for Best New Artist and I have never heard her name in my life. Apparently very few others have either. The internet has been in an uproar since the award was announced, and it got even louder after Arcade Fire took the best award of the night.
I am sure that there are large amounts of people who follow both of these people's music, but the masses do not. Shouldn't a band have a hit song before being given one of the most coveted awards in music? I'm willing to bet that there were hundreds of classical music nerds and rock groupies that were just as shocked as the winners when they stole the awards from the real stars.
