Killing Trees? Have we really sunken that low?!
If you are from Alabama, or even from the south, you know about the time aged tradition of Alabama and Auburn football rivalry.
Throughout the past, both sides of the war have made fools of themselves for the sake of their team of choice; but this guy "Al" from Dadeville, Alabama has taken it just a little too far for me.
Al supposedly called a local radio station and told the sports newscaster that he had fatally poisoned oak trees that have become an icon to Auburn football fans all over. The trees are traditionally rolled by students and fans after an Auburn win, but when the Tigers overtook Alabama in the last Iron Bowl, Al was too mad to take looking at those trees rolled yet again.
"The weekend after the Iron Bowl I went to Auburn, Alabama, because I live 30 miles away, and I poisoned the 2 Toomer's trees," Al said when he called into the radio station. After being reminded that the offense that he was admitting to was illegal, he added, "Well you think I care? ... I really don't. Hey, and you can tell Tammy I ... nevermind. Roll d*mn Tide!"
Horticulture professors have determined from soil samples that there is little hope for the survival of the trees, but they are doing everything that they can do to care for it. It's likely, though, that the trees won't make it.
What really struck me was how Auburn University has responded to the whole ordeal. The university has issued statements about upholding their reputation and students have rolled the trees, for what could be the last time, to show their pride for their school and team.
