Grads Find Jobs Easier This Year
In a report by USA Today, 2011 graduates are finding it much easier to find a job after they graduate than the graduates of 2010. This is wonderful news to me! I always fear that I am spending all this time, money, and effort to get out into the world and be homeless. Employers are reported to be hiring 19.3% more graduates this year than last year, which means the likelihood of getting a job is much higher but employers are not receiving nearly as many applications as they would have in the past. Many graduated who have been searching for jobs for years are just now finding positions that need to be filled. The salaries that many companies that many companies just couldn't afford to pay college graduates during the recession, are now much more feasible and offer opportunities for both the company and the job-seeker.

James Frey to Battle it Out with Oprah One Last Time
Five years ago, when Oprah told us all to go out and buy a copy of 'Million Little Pieces" by James Frey, we all listened. The book shot to the top of the best sellers list and sat there comfortably for quite a while, but Oprah soon learned a few things about Frey that made her a little angry. Frey had admitted to lying about most of the things that he wrote about in his supposed "auto-biography." Oprah was naturally furious for being led on by Frey and making an embarrassment out of her to her own fans. She soon had Frey on her show and laid it on him hard. She later apologized for what was a fairly hostile interview, but she now wants to have him back one last time. Oprah plans to have Frey on this last season of her show to talk about his new book "The Final Testament of The Holy Bible."

22 Year Old Sworn in as Mayor in Kansas
22 year-old Taggart Wall has overcome a lot in his life from a beginning where he wasn't even expected to live through infancy. You proved the world wrong and has been striving to make a difference through public service since high school. Wall ran for city commission in 2005 but lost, he vowed to run again in 2009. He did run again and this time he won. We was sworn in as the mayor of Winfield, Kansas on April 18th. Stories of young people who aspire to make a difference in the world are truly inspiring and I hope that I can one day do the same.

Political Conspiracy Theories
CNN.com recently posted an article about eleven political conspiracy theories that they have either debunked or found no evidence for. Though I have heard of most of the ones they write about, conspiracy theories are always fun! Here's what CNN posted on their website:

1) The myth: George Washington wasn't the first U.S. president.

The facts: Theorists say it was actually John Hanson, the president of the Continental Congress, who served as the nation's first president, not George Washington.
That claim is simply false.
The office of "President of the United States" was created under the Constitution in 1787, long after Hanson died.
2) The rumor: George W. Bush has the lowest IQ of all the presidents.

The facts: A report by the Lovenstein Institute in 2001 found that George W. Bush had the lowest IQ of any president in the past 50 years. The report was discovered on the website lovenstein.org.
The problem? There is no Lovenstein Institute and no report.
Case solved.
3) The myth: Washington Redskins always predict the presidential winner.

The facts: The claim is that, since 1936, the outcome of the Washington Redskins' last home game before the presidential election has predicted the outcome of who wins the White House.
The way it works: If the Redskins lose, the incumbent party loses; if they win, the incumbent wins.
Although the circumstances have worked out for 17 elections in modern history, it is just another political superstition that pundits love to use -- or maybe to fill time.
In 2004, the Redskins lost to the Green Bay Packers 28-14 on October 31. Under the myth, incumbent President George W. Bush should have lost to Democratic Sen. John Kerry.
That was not the case. Kerry lost, too.
4) The myth: Sarah Palin didn't give birth to baby Trig.

The facts: Soon after Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin was announced as Sen. John McCain's 2008 presidential running mate, rumors abounded that her newborn son, Trig, who was born with Down syndrome, was not hers.
The McCain campaign, along with Palin herself, shot down the rumor.
Conspiracy theorists, now called "Trig Truthers," point to photos taken in late March of that year in which Palin's stomach appears, they say, to be flat -- not the image of an expectant mother. But other photos show her with a round stomach.
Then there's the question of why Palin waited so long to seek medical attention after her water broke during a trip to Texas. Reports indicate that it took more than 15 hours for her to get to a hospital after flying back to Alaska.
Some claimed that the baby, born in April, might have been that of teenage daughter Bristol. But Bristol gave birth to her own child, Tripp, in December. Myth busted.
5) The theory: The government was behind the September 11 attacks.

The facts: The September 11 terrorist attacks have become a lightning rod for conspiracy theorists who have offered alternative explanations to the horror of that day.
Some of the theories include that the U.S. government was behind the entire terror plot, including taking down the World Trade Center, in order to take the country to war in the Middle East; the Pentagon was not hit by a commercial plane but rather by a missile; and United Flight 93 did not crash after passengers stormed the cockpit, but an Air Force jet took it out.
Popular Mechanics magazine looked into the claims and was able to "debunk each of these assertions with hard evidence and a healthy dose of common sense."
6) The myth: Sen. John McCain had an illegitimate black child.

The facts: There was an effort during the 2000 GOP presidential primaries to start a smear campaign against John McCain, who was running a tight race against George W. Bush in South Carolina, saying the Arizona senator had an illegitimate black child.
In an interview with NBC's "Today Show" last year, political operative Karl Rove, who was said to have been behind the story, shot down the claim. He said he had "nothing to do" with the rumor, adding that it came from "a professor at Bob Jones University" and not the Bush campaign.
McCain and his wife, Cindy, have an adopted daughter from Bangladesh.
Bush ended up winning South Carolina 53% to 42%.
7) The charge: The Clintons were responsible for the death of Vince Foster.

The facts: In summer 1993, Vince Foster, deputy White House counsel in the Clinton administration and close friend to the first couple, was found dead in a federal park in northern Virginia. Investigators ruled it a suicide.
In 1994, the Arkansas Project -- an effort to discredit the Clintons -- raised the idea that the couple was responsible for the murder of Foster and others who may have had incriminating evidence against the former Arkansas governor.
Three investigations into the death turned up no evidence of a link. The Clintons have emphatically denied any involvement. The rumor, however, found its way into the media and GOP circles.
8) The charge: Rep. Gary Condit was involved in Chandra Levy's disappearance.

The facts: The 2001 disappearance of Chandra Levy, an intern for the federal Bureau of Prisons, drew national attention after her parents discovered a connection with then-Rep. Gary Condit, D-California.
He was never a suspect in the case but was questioned intensively for details as to Levy's whereabouts. Condit was also rumored to have had a sexual relationship with Levy an allegation he repeatedly refused to answer.
But Condit's semen was found on her underwear, according to an FBI biologist who testified at a trial in 2010.
Levy's body was found in a Washington park more than a year after her disappearance. Salvadoran immigrant Ingmar Guandique -- who was in prison for another crime -- was convicted in her killing and sentenced in 2011 to 60 years in prison.
9) The theory: Someone besides Lee Harvey Oswald killed JFK.

The facts: Decades after President John F. Kennedy's assassination in Dallas, the shooting and the events that followed continue to fascinate many Americans.
Much of that interest rests on the theory that the assassination was the result of a conspiracy -- not the act of a lone gunman, Lee Harvey Oswald.
Theories include that Kennedy "was killed by CIA agents acting either out of anger over the Bay of Pigs or at the behest of Vice President Lyndon Johnson," by the KGB or by "mobsters mad at Kennedy's brother for initiating the prosecution of organized crime rings," according to Time magazine.
But the Warren Commission, established to investigate the assassination, found that Oswald was the lone gunman -- and that there was not a second shooter.
10) The myth: President Zachary Taylor was poisoned to death.

The facts: Taylor, the nation's 12th president, was rumored to have died after being poisoned with arsenic, possibly by his wife.
But the claim was debunked by DNA scientists in 1991.
Medical officials in Kentucky ruled that he was not poisoned but rather died because of natural causes, such as gastroenteritis. The results were obtained after testing Taylor's tissue samples.
"The question of whether he was poisoned or not will no longer hang over us," Coroner Richard F. Greathouse of Jefferson County told the New York Times. "We've put that to rest once and for all."
Arsenic was found, but state officials said it was in levels too low to be considered deadly.
11) The myth: Barack Obama wasn't born in the U.S.

The facts: CNN has investigated these claims by "birthers" who say the nation's 44th president was not born in America and thus is not eligible to be president.
The Obama team and the state of Hawaii released a certification of live birth that documents the president's birth on August 4, 1961, in Honolulu. This is not the original birth certificate but is a valid legal document. In Hawaii and other states, original birth certificates are not released when requested later.
Explain it to me: 'Birthers'
The certificate, officials say, allows a person born in Hawaii to get a driver's license, purchase land and obtain a U.S. passport.
The "birthers" claim that Obama doesn't want to show the birth certificate because it may claim that he wasn't born in America.
But state officials -- including Gov. Neil Abercrombie and Dr. Chiyome Fukino, the former director of Hawaii's Department of Health -- said they saw the document, and Obama was born in the U.S.
In addition, his birth announcement appeared in two Honolulu papers. The announcements are provided to the newspapers by the Department of Health and not members of the public, according to officials.
Gaga Let the 'R' Word Slip
In an interview with NME magazine, Lady Gaga used the word "retarded" after her song "Born This Way" was compared to Madonna's "Express Yourself." I am a huge Gaga fan and I have to admit, I have been a little furious about people comparing the Mother Monster to Madonna, but until now Gaga has responded very well to the comments. She said, "If you put the songs next to each other, side by side, the only similarities are the chord progression," Gaga told NME. "It's the same one that's been in disco music for the last 50 years. Just because I'm the first f-ing artist in 25 years to think of putting it on Top 40 radio, it doesn't mean I'm a plaigarist, it means I'm f-ing smart. Sorry." Gaga has since apologized for the incident, and reached out to any of her fans who may have been hurt or offended by her comment."I consider it part of my life's work and music to push the boundaries of love and acceptance,” Gaga told CNN in a statement. “My apologies for not speaking thoughtfully. To anyone that was hurt, please know that it was furiously unintentional. An honest mistake, requires honesty to make. Whether life's disabilities, left you outcast bullied or teased, rejoice and love yourself today."

Facebook Town Hall Meeting
President Obama started a round of town-hall meetings Wednesday at the headquarters of Facebook. CEO and founder, Mark Zuckerberg moderated the meeting with many serious and comical topics. President Obama started the meeting with a story about a dinner that he had with Zuckerburg in January where he was forced to wear a suit and tie, but was clearly uncomfortable. After they both decided to remove their coats, Obama went into his speech on the federal deficit, education, healthcare, and immigration.
The Obama administration and Facebook made it clear that the location of the town-hall was in no way intended to be an endorsement from either side, although Obama's campaign used Facebook and social media to win the 2008 election and will likely do the same in 2012. Obama praised Zuckerberg and his team for what Facebook has allowed the world to do in the way of getting involved with politics. He also applauds them for their rapid and long lasting success in an American industry.

"Al from Dadeville"
I wrote early on about the man, Harvey Updike, that has been accused of poisoning the historic trees at Toomer's Corner at Auburn University. Now Updike seems to be truly sorry for the damage that he has done, not only to the trees, but to the reputation of Alabama fans. Whether his apologies are sincere or he's just sorry because he got caught remains to be seen. Though he never admitted to poisoning the trees, he did admit to being the Finebaum radio show caller, "Al from Dadeville." Updike is now saying that he was attacked by someone while he was tying to get a drink at a courthouse, but he is not accusing his attacker of being an Auburn fan. No doubt will he try to play up his "attack' in court.

Grand Opening is Finally Here!!!
The Birmingham Zoo has finally had their grand opening ceremony for the state of the art Trails of Africa Exhibit! The zoo has allowed a sneak peek into the new exhibit for a month, but the two African Bull Elephants have yet to make close contact until todays grand opening. City and state officials had the opportunity to experience the new $12.5 million dollar attraction today, even getting their suits wet in the rain didn't keep them from enjoying this experience.
Trails of Africa is a 14-acre exhibit that will house many different animals from across the African Savannah in one large, open space. Though the Birmingham Zoo only has two elephants now, Bulwagi and Calli, they hope to add at least two more in the future. The local zoo has had a rough past with keeping up with national accreditation standards in the past, but this new, one of a kind exhibit will hopefully draw in new visitors from around the nation, as well as old visitors who may not have had a reason to revisit.

A Royal Wedding!
Though in modern times, a royal wedding may seem unimportant to the world, the wedding is of what will one day be the king and queen of England. There is always a huge to-do over royal weddings, I can remember my grandmother being so excited about watching Diana getting married so many years ago. The questions this article asks is: "Why should anyone care?" The truth is, the current record of successful royal weddings are pretty low, but any royal wedding, lasting or not, is history in the making. We all learned about the many kings and queens who did good and bad things in the coarse of history, we just can't thing of William and Kate's wedding the same way because we live in such a different world today. Who's to say that after William takes the throne many years from now that he wont be faced with war and conflict that could land him in the history books of tomorrow as a hero king. We all love the the story of Henry VIII six wives, they've even made successful television shows about it. Whether you give a hoot about the history or not, we all crave that glimpse into the royal's lives because we know that it is something near a fairy tale. Every little girl hopes that a prince will sweep her away and make her his princess, but the probabilities are just too low. We'll just have to settle for watching it on T.V....

Giant Human Trafficking Lawsuit Filed in California
When we think of slavery in the U.S. we automatically think of the past, but through the efforts of numerous organizations the issue of modern day slavery has come to the publics attention. When I hear human-trafficking I think of prostitution, and the ever-growing business involved with pimps exploiting young girls. However, there are a number of farms in California, Hawaii, and Washington who are being accusing of luring immigrant workers from Thailand and then forcing them to work for no pay. The owners of these farms offer the workers a lucrative job working on a farm and help them get a passport and workers visa to come to the U.S. When the workers finally arrive to the states their passports are taken from them and they are threatened with deportation if they talk. Even worse, when they start to work on a farm they are slapped with a recruitment fee that was upwards of $10,000. The lawsuit is seeking backpay and damages for each of the workers, but there could potentially be hundreds of clients involved. When CNN contacted the farms being prosecuted, not of them would answer or comment on the situation.

"The Dark Knight Rises"
There has apparently been a lot of buzz about who is going to be cast in the sequel to "The Dark Knight," called "The Dark Knight Rises." We knew that Christian Bale would be returning to play Batman and that Anne Hathaway had been cast in the role of Catwoman. Director, Christopher Nolan, announced yesterday that he had cast Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Marion Cotillard for parts in the upcoming movie, but Gordon-Levitt will not be playing the Riddler like speculated. Both of these actors worked together on Nolan's last film, "Inception", and Nolan said he instantly thought of the two of them when casting for this movie. "Inception's" Tom Hardy has also been cast in the sequel as Bane. "The Dark Knight Rises" is expected to be released July 20th, 2012.

Apple Blows Expectations Out of the Water
Due to the release of the IPad 2 and the availability to purchase an IPhone through Verizon, Apple's numbers for the quarter were way up from last year. Though the IPad did not do as well as analysts expected, Apple COO, Tim Cook, said that the only reason they didn't sell more tablets was because they just couldn't make them as fast as people wanted to buy them. Though IPads, IPhones, and Mac Computers were flying off the shelf this past quarter, Apple's saving grace, the IPod, has continued to decrease in sales, falling 17% this quarter. With the rising number of people who are buying IPhones and IPads, it would only make sense that people no longer need a secondary device to do something that their phone or tablet can do just as well. I have a feeling that we may see the end of days for IPod before too long.

I've Been Carrying a Tracking Device for Years?!
Some techno nerds have discovered that several Mac products have been collecting data on where we've been and we didn't even know it. IPhones, IPads, and some Macbooks save pinpoint locations of when and where you've been while carrying your devices. I can't decide if I like this or not, but I can only imagine the problems that it can cause for the millions of users that have something to hide. As you can imagine, there are a lot of people who are not too happy about this new found feature, but Apple has yet to make a comment on the reasoning behind it. The IPhone uses cellular towers to triangulate your location, instead of GPS signals, so there's no way of getting out of it if you want to keep a signal on your phone. If you want to see your map of where you've been recently you can download the program here.

Michelle Obama's Near Death Plane Incident!
Apparently Michelle Obama's plane came a little too close to landing at the same time as a military cargo plane yesterday. The FAA decided that for the first lady's safety, her plane should circle around the runway before landing so that her plane didn't get caught in the heavy wind drag that would follow the cargo plane. For some reason, I have a hard time believing that this is as big of an issue as the media is making it out to be. The FAA has launched a full investigation into why air traffic controllers didn't catch the problem before it happened and suspect that it was the fault of the air traffic controllers. With the number of planes that travel through the sky everyday, this kind of thing has to happen on a regular basis. The coverage that this story has gotten is completely ridiculous.

Hand Transplants...
It has always amazed me that modern science allows us to take pieces of another human body and make it work for someone else. Organ transplants I have heard of, I even heard of a lady getting a face transplant, but an entire hand is something new to me. The complexities involved with transferring a hand to a new body, apparently a 14 hour process, have to be unbelievable.
Emily Fennell, from Yuba City, California, lost her hand in 2006 when a car rolled over her and caused doctors to have to amputate. Fennell learned to function normally with only her left hand for six years, but after the birth of her daughter she decided that she could not provide what her daughter needed without both of her hands. She will now go through months of therapy to reteach herself how to use two hands again. She is already able to wiggle her new fingers!

50,000 Jobs In One Day
McDonald's started a campaign today to hire 50,000 new employees across the nation; that equals four new employees per store. McDonald's has aired campaigns for years promoting the opportunities that come with being a mcDonald's employee and they are really playing it up today to fill the 50,000 positions that they claim to have available. "According to McDonald's spokespeople, 75% of their restaurant managers and 40% of corporate employees started as restaurant crew members." In an economy where millions are out of a job, an opportunity like this seems to be really promising to a lot of people. The truth is, in an economy like today's, the idea of 50,000 jobs is going to get the hopes of a lot of unemployed citizens who are highly unlikely to get one of the positions.

The Monster Ball Tour
I had the great honor of seeing the Mother Monster yet again on her never-ending Monster Ball Tour last night, and I have to say that it was just as epic as the last two times that I saw her. If you have not seen her show before, it is definitely worth the price of a ticket. Lady Gaga's show is more of a story than a concert, chronicling her and her fan's journey to the Monster Ball. The passion that she shows for her fans during her show is truly inspiring and liberating. Seeing a fellow freak that made it to be the most successful artist in the world in a matter of three years is a show of just how far anyone can go with determination and talent.
"Birther Bill" Really...?!
Apparently a number of states are drafting bills that would require presidential candidates to prove their citizenship through numerous documents to be put on the state's ballot. The governor of Arizona recently vetoed a bill that would require candidates to provide, not only a birth certificate but also early baptismal or circumcision records, hospital birth records, postpartum medical records, or other qualifying documents. It would also require candidates to submit affidavits and sworn statements declaring their citizenship and residency for the past 14 years. Apparently 14 other states are considering similar bills, but other than Arizona; Connecticut, Maine, and Maryland governors have already vetoed bills that have made it to their desks.
These bills are obviously targeted at the controversy surrounding President Obama's campaign having to produce a certificate of live birth. What amazes me is that people honestly think that a presidential candidate could actually win an election without having been born in the U.S. I would be embarrassed for any state that actually passes a law like this and I am sure that Dr. Doctor Robert Bently will be the first governor to actually do it...

COCKS!
Now that I have your attention...I wanted to blog about a serious, little known issue in Alabama. A bill recently went before the Alabama House of Representatives (HB74) that would increase penalties for cockfighting. Under current laws, the act of cockfighting is punishable by a fine of $20-$30. When you make thousands, sometimes millions, of dollars off of cockfighting why the hell would you worry about losing even 50 bucks?! Alabama has the most lenient laws on cockfighting than any other U.S. state or territory. So, naturally, people come from all over to participate in massive events that have little consequences.
When HB 74 went before the house, most of the representatives elected not to even hear the bill. Many of the representatives claimed that they believed that there are a lot of citizens on their districts that are pro cockfighting, but when an official poll was taken over 80% of Alabamians were for the new bill. Other representatives were likely influenced by the protesters outside and others were contacted by nearby state representatives who do not want our laws to change. How our state can justify taking suck strong action on dog fighting, yet almost condone cockfighting is outrageous. If you would like to see change in our state's law, follow this link to learn more and to take action.
(Can'r believe The Birmingham News has not written on this more recently, but this was the most recent article I could find)

I Have High Hopes for the "Tea Party"
If the Tea Party can gain enough support to get a candidate on the ballot for the 2012 presidential election, things will be a lot easier for the Democrats. I am by no means a Democrat, contrary to popular belief, but I do feel that our country is not quite ready for another Republican.
The Tea Party would pull enough votes away from whoever the GOP puts up, that President Obama would have no problem being re-elected. It's hard enough as it is beating an incumbent president, but splitting the votes on the right would make it a cake walk for Obama. Especially if the Tea Party can get a big name like Donald Trump or Sarah Palin.
Sarah Palin is an embarrassment to our political system, and our education system, but you can't deny how much support she has been able to pull since the last election. All the next election, and every election before and after, will come down to is deciding who is the lesser of two evils.

Police Brutality in Birmingham
I have a lot of respect for the Journalist who wrote this article and think that it is a fair representation of how ridiculous and embarrassing the Birmingham Police force is to our city. We have enough problems as it is trying to portray that our city has rebounded from our cloudy past, which it is slowly doing, without a white cop beating the crap out a black guy.
I have watched this video several times and have noticed that there are a couple of black police officers involved as well so I don't think that this case of brutality has anything to do with race, but it would easily be seen that way to the random outsider. What I did not know, and what was not mentioned in any of the other reports that I have seen, is the extensive rap sheet that this man has. I didn't even know what the man was being arrested for from just seeing the video.
What is clear is that this is definitely a case of police brutality. There is no question that the man being apprehended got out of his car, or whoever's car it is that he stole it from, with his hands in the air giving himself over to the authorities. There was absolutely no reason for the excessive beating that occurred after the officer already had him on the ground. There was also no reason for one of the other officers to shove the innocent passerby towards the end of the video.
Saying that Birmingham police officers need more extensive training is just the city's way of saying that they don't give a crap about what happened, they just need something to tell the media until this all blows over.
